22 Apr 2025 We took part in The Carter Center´s 2025 Mental Health Program Review
The Mental Health Unit of the Benedict Menni Health Center ws honored to participate in the Annual Review of the Global Mental Health Program of The Carter Center, which took place in Monrovia between April 8 and 10.
With this annual event, The Carter Center evaluates its performance in mental health in the country and plans its future actions. This was also the first time it was held outside the United States, coinciding with the 15th anniversary of the beginning of the collaboration with the Government of Liberia. Over the past 15 years, The Carter Center has played a key role in strengthening Liberia’s mental health system, contributing to professional development, policy reform, public advocacy and community-based mental health interventions. As a leading player in the sector, Benedict Menni Mental Health Center was invited to take part in the conference.
In those days we had the opportunity to meet Mr. Josh Carter, grandson of former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalyn Carter, a driving force behind mental health programs. Mr. Josh Carter had come to Liberia for this occasion accompanied by important international partners in the field of mental health.
During the sessions, The Carter Center’s Senior Country Director, Mr. Benedict Dossen, stressed that the success of the mental health program in Liberia is the result of a strong partnership between The Carter Center, the Government of Liberia and other partners such as the Benedict Menni Mental Health Center. Mr. Dossen acknowledged the collective efforts that have led to the country’s achievements to date, but recalled that problems and challenges remain, such as limited access to services, insufficient integration of mental health into primary care, and shortages of medications.
