08 Jun We welcome four new staff members
This month saw recruitment of new members of staff joining the team. We officially received many applicants eligible for vacant positions at our centre: nurses, aid-nurses and social workers. Following this an interview session was conducted, led by Sr Wilhelmina Kade Browne, Director of the National Catholic Health Secretariat (NCHC) who chaired the panel in drilling these candidates.

The María Josefa Recio Mental Health Unit welcomed in May three new patients who had never before passed through our center, and happily said goodbye to two of its residents, who show a significant improvement in their condition and in their ability to develop their life in the community. Three other patients have begun to enjoy provisional discharges known as "trial parole", in which they enjoy time at home while awaiting their definitive discharge.
31 May Celebrating the 140th anniversary of the foundation of Sisters Hospitallers
On May 31st, 1881, the Congregation of the Sisters Hospitallers of The Sacred Heart of Jesus was established by Fr Benito Menni. This foundation was mainly aimed at caring for the mentally-ill, however, over a century of providing hospitality which has seen an expansion into other aspects of healthcare: medical, surgical, obstetric, geriatric and other specialties.

An image taken by our Psychiatric Nurse Ato Kwamena Sagoe at the St. Benedict Menni Health Center in Monrovia has won the 2nd prize in the II International Sisters Hospitallers Photography Contest.
13 May Celebrating Saint Benedict Menni´s Day with #ADoseOfHope
St Benedict Menni, the founding father of the Sisters Hospitaller of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as part of his pastoral mission passed away in Dinan, France on April 24, 1914. The Saint worked for the elderly and those who were abandoned. Most especially, he cared for the mentally ill patient.
08 May Our Unit hosts 20 professionals from The Carter Center
As part of our partnership with The Carter Center, our Unit hosted 20 professionals from that organization who are undergoing a six-month course in mental health.
07 May We got our anti-Covid vaccination
On March 6, the Republic of Liberia received about 96,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The arrival of the AstraZeneca vaccines means that hope has been restored to halt a global disease that has already impacted the lives and livelihood of many.
07 May Two new admissions and 2 readmissions in April
During the month of April, the Maria Josefa Recio Mental Rehabilitation Unit has been quite busy. We added two new women to the center, bringing the total number of women currently residing here to 16. Two other former patients were readmitted, and no new patients were discharged.
