24 Dec 2024 Helping review and validate mental health regulations in Liberia
The Saint Benedict Menni Mental Health Center has been one of the organizations participating in the recent Review and Validation Workshop on Mental Health Regulations in Liberia, organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with The Carter Center. This event, held from December 19 to 22, brought together mental health experts, legal professionals, and other stakeholders to review the existing legislative framework and establish a solid and effective regulatory system for mental health services in the country.
Ato Kwamena Sagoe, coordinator of the center, was part of the working group that discussed and reviewed the proposed regulations.
The workshop was led by Moses Ziah II, Director of the Mental Health Department at the Ministry of Health of Liberia, and Kashef Ijaz, Vice President of Health Programs at The Carter Center. Both emphasized the importance of establishing regulations that protect the rights of people with mental health conditions, facilitate access to quality services, and strengthen the capacities of professionals in the sector.
The Carter Center, a key partner in efforts to improve mental health in Liberia, has played a crucial role in supporting initiatives like this, aimed at transforming the country’s mental health system and ensuring its sustainability.
With its participation in this working group, the Saint Benedict Menni Mental Health Center reaffirms its role as a reference facility in the mental health sector in Liberia, its commitment to improving mental health in the country, and its dedication to collaborating closely with authorities and other relevant actors. This workshop is an important step toward creating a more accessible mental health system for all in Liberia.
